Tetrapod biostratigraphy and biochronology of the Triassic–Jurassic transition on the southern Colorado Plateau, USA
نویسندگان
چکیده
Nonmarine fluvial, eolian and lacustrine strata of the Chinle and Glen Canyon groups on the southern Colorado Plateau preserve tetrapod body fossils and footprints that are one of the world's most extensive tetrapod fossil records across the Triassic– Jurassic boundary. We organize these tetrapod fossils into five, time-successive biostratigraphic assemblages (in ascending order, Owl Rock, Rock Point, Dinosaur Canyon, Whitmore Point and Kayenta) that we assign to the (ascending order) Revueltian, Apachean, Wassonian and Dawan land-vertebrate faunachrons (LVF). In doing so, we redefine the Wassonian and the Dawan LVFs. The Apachean–Wassonian boundary approximates the Triassic–Jurassic boundary. This tetrapod biostratigraphy and biochronology of the Triassic–Jurassic transition on the southern Colorado Plateau confirms that crurotarsan extinction closely corresponds to the end of the Triassic, and that a dramatic increase in dinosaur diversity, abundance and body size preceded the end of the Triassic. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. Tetrapod Biostratigraphy and Biochronology across the Triassic-jurassic Boundary in Northeastern Arizona
Nonmarine fluvial, eolian and lacustrine strata of the Chinle and Glen Canyon groups in northeastern Arizona and adjacent areas preserve tetrapod body fossils and footprints that are one of the world’s most extensive tetrapod fossil records across the Triassic-Jurassic boundary. We organize these tetrapod fossils into five, time-successive biostratigraphic assemblages (in ascending order, Owl R...
متن کاملBiochronological Significance of Late Triassic Tetrapods from Krasiejów, Poland
The Krasiejów locality in the Upper Triassic of southern Poland yields the tetrapod taxa Cyclotosaurus robustus (= C. intermedius), Metoposaurus diagnosticus (we reject proposed subspecies of this species), Stagonolepis robertsoni, Teratosaurus suevicus (= T. silesiacus), Parasuchus bransoni and Silesaurus opolensis. The occurrences of Parasuchus and Metoposaurus indicate the Krasiejów assembla...
متن کاملGlobal Triassic Tetrapod Biostratigraphy and Biochronology: 2007 Status
The global Triassic timescale based on tetrapod biochronology remains a robust tool for both global and regional age assignment and correlation. The Lootsbergian and Nonesian land-vertebrate faunachrons (LVFs) are of Early Triassic age; cross correlation of part of the Lootsbergian to the Olenekian and all or part of the Nonesian to the Anisian lacks support. In the South African Karoo basin, b...
متن کاملSecond Day: Early and Middle Triassic Stratigraphy, Paleontology and Correlation in Northeastern Arizona
Today’s trip traverses a nearly east-west swath of the southern Colorado Plateau in northeatern Arizona (Fig. 2.1), where the low and barren topography is developed in Permian and Triassic sedimentary rocks. Here, our focus is on the Lower-Middle Triassic Moenkopi Formation. In northern Arizona, east of Flagstaff, the Moenkopi section (Fig. 2.2) is a relatively thin (< 150 m thick) and almost e...
متن کاملA reappraisal of the Middle Triassic chirotheriid Chirotherium ibericus Navás, 1906 (Iberian Range NE Spain), with comments on the Triassic tetrapod track biochronology of the Iberian Peninsula
Triassic vertebrate tracks are known from the beginning of the 19th century and have a worldwide distribution. Several Triassic track ichnoassemblages and ichnotaxa have a restricted stratigraphic range and are useful in biochronology and biostratigraphy. The record of Triassic tracks in the Iberian Peninsula has gone almost unnoticed although more than 25 localities have been described since 1...
